Psychiatrist listening intently

If you’re seeking a university based, academically focused psychiatry residency program with a strong record of success, look no further than Fletcher Allen and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Between the close-knit nature of the department, the highly skilled faculty and the amazing quality of life that you can enjoy here in this special corner of New England, this is a truly unique place to further your education and your career.

Dedicated to your Education

The Psychiatry Residency Program in Vermont will graduate its fiftieth class in 2012. We are proud of our history and take pride in our graduates. Our strength lies in our size, which promotes individual attention to each resident’s learning and continues to facilitate the building of lifelong, professional friendships. Our residents enjoy a close relationship with our faculty, who as part of a university hospital serve as medical researchers, professors and clinicians. Equally important is the fact that our faculty members are approachable, easy to work with, and committed to providing you with the mentoring and support you demand as a physician in training. However, the best judge of our program is residents themselves — read what they have to say.

Program Snapshot

We accept four residents per year, two of whom participate in an integrated five-year general/child and adolescent psychiatry program. Find more information here. All four residents function as a single group until the PGY-IV year when the two integrated residents begin full-time child and adolescent psychiatry training.

We serve the community and region with comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services. Our recently constructed inpatient units were designed with input from the mental health community, ensuring that they were built around the needs of our patients. The department also has a strong commitment to advancing the field through medical research with a focus on the areas of substance abuse, child psychopathology and geriatric psychiatry.

The Vermont Lifestyle

While Fletcher Allen/UVM provides the ideal environment for your professional and academic pursuits, Vermont offers limitless possibilities for your recreational pursuits. Burlington is equal parts small city and big town, and is consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the country. It’s a thriving place where cultural and recreational opportunities abound, where you can be a part of a close-knit community, and where young families can truly feel at home. From the slopes of the Green Mountains to the east to the stunning shores of Lake Champlain to the west, there’s no shortage of ways to get outside and enjoy the best of Vermont. In short, it’s truly a unique and inspiring place to live, work, learn and grow. Learn more.
